Description:
In 1926 an act was passed by the Madras Legislative Council to establish the Andhra University 'in and for the Telugu districts of the presidency of Madras'. The act established four categories of colleges: university, degree, professional and oriental. These colleges provide courses for higher degrees; ordinary degrees in arts/communication/science; professional degrees in medicine/teacher education/technology and oriental studies respectively.

Later in 1977, three postgraduate extension centres were established.

The University is located in Visakhapatnam, a port on the east coast of India, and its jurisdiction is restricted to the districts of Srikakulam, east and west Godavari, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram.

The School of Correspondence Courses offers degrees at Bachelor and Master levels in the following subjects: English, Telugu, Hindi, Education, Economics, History, Sociology, Politics, Public Administration, Commerce, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

BA and BCom are also offered under the Open University Scheme together with preparatory courses for the above degrees.

Postgraduate Diplomas are available in Cooperative and Rural Studies, Translation (Telugu), Functional English and Environmental Studies.

Admission:
Admission is open to candidates residing in India. Entry requirements vary depending upon the course.

Services:
In addition to response sheets which should be returned for marking within 15 days of receipt, students receive master lessons periodically which continuously monitor progress by way of house tests.

Weekend classes are held every second Saturday and Sunday at the 16 study centres, eight of which have well equipped libraries with textbooks in both English and Telugu.

Some courses require compulsory attendance at study centres for practical training purposes.


Registration:
The University colleges have a two-term year; July to December, January to March. The Degree colleges have a three-term year; July to September, October to December, January to March.
